The plastic waste industry is undergoing significant transformations, driven by the need to address environmental concerns and promote sustainability. What Waste Code is a new platform created to simplify the process of finding appropriate waste facilities in an easy-to-use online platform, using European Waste Catalogue (EWC) codes.
Recent regulatory changes, such as the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), aim to reduce waste and encourage circularity and there is a growing emphasis on reusable packaging systems and innovative recycling technologies.
One of the most impactful changes is the introduction of the Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) for drinks containers in England and Northern Ireland, set to launch in October 2027. This scheme will require consumers to pay a deposit when purchasing drinks in plastic and metal containers, which can be reclaimed when the empty containers are returned through designated collection points. The DRS aims to reduce littering, boost recycling, and help protect wildlife by moving towards a circular economy where valuable resources are kept in use for longer.
However, identifying the best route for your waste, and knowing which waste sites accept which types of waste is an ongoing issue for manufacturers and companies in the UK.
As the director of What Waste Code, Katie Morrison is excited to share how her platform can support waste producers in navigating these changes.
What Waste Code simplifies the process of finding appropriate waste facilities by allowing producers to search for sites that can accept specific waste types based on European Waste Catalogue (EWC) codes. This not only ensures proper waste management but also helps reduce the environmental impact of plastic waste.
If you’re a registered waste site on the public register and would like to advertise that you handle plastic waste, get in contact. What Waste Code can list the wastes you handle by EWC code and description. For example, if you handle EWC 20 01 39, municipal waste plastics, you could also add the description PET or HDPE. For EWC 16 01 19, plastic from end-of-life vehicles (ELVs), you could add a description that you accept car dashboards.
What Waste Code is passionate about fostering a cleaner, greener future. Its mission is to connect waste producers with the right facilities, ensuring that plastic waste is managed responsibly and sustainably.
By connecting waste producers with the right facilities, the company is making it easier to comply with new regulations and contribute to a more sustainable future. What Waste Code want to work together to turn these industry changes into opportunities for positive environmental impact.
What Waste Code streamlines the search process, delivering instant and precise results. Beyond merely identifying waste codes, the platform provides detailed information about corresponding waste sites, including locations, accepted materials, and contact details. This transparency empowers users to make informed decisions, fostering responsible waste disposal practices.
