Scaled Win Technology Award for Their Work on London Marathon Mile Markers

The Techies celebrate the amazing tech innovation happening in Swindon and Wiltshire. This year, the team ‘Flying the flag’ for Swindon is Bob Bradley, Alex Marshall and David Speight from Scaled Ltd.

The Techies judging panel recognised the outstanding contribution the Scaled Ltd team made in taking 14 tonnes of plastic waste and recycling it to create new mile markers for the London Marathon, using their large-scale 3D printing facilities and their problem-solving skills.

Alex Marshall, the new CEO of Scaled, commented on winning the award: “I’m feeling thrilled. I mean, it’s been such a blur; I started at Scaled earlier this year, and it’s been our biggest project ever with the London Marathon mile markers, which happened a couple of weeks back and went tremendously well, and now this award! The challenge now is to keep it going and do more good work.

The markers were revealed publicly for the first time at the traditional Runners Show on Wednesday, September 28, before the London Marathon itself. However, South Swindon MP Sir Robert Buckland and Swindon Mayor Abdul Amin both came along for a sneak preview before the event.

South Swindon MP Sir Robert Buckland said: “I was thrilled to come along and support the team at Scaled and see the new mile markers, which are made out of recycled products. I’m so pleased to support their efforts and their part in such a global international sporting event.

Swindon Mayor Abdul Amin said: “This company is putting Swindon on the map by providing these mile markers for such a global event, one of the Big Six marathon events in the world. Millions of pairs of eyes will be on this engineering achievement on Sunday.”

The award-winning project had to overcome significant design and manufacturing challenges set down by the London Marathon organisers before the 3.5m high mile markers were produced, as David Speight, co-founder of Scaled, explains: “The markers are fully sustainable, using plastic from a variety of sources including waste streams from previous London Marathon events to help with their sustainability goals. In addition, we took the design concept from a group of architectural students – who won a competition through the Stephen Lawrence Trust to design the new mile markers – and then turned it into a full product, one that was modular for easy setup and deconstruction, to minimise disruption on London streets, and, of course, safe for members of the public.

The Scaled team are now looking to springboard off this success into new projects creating temporary structures for events, festivals and other areas in the built environment.
