HotSeat: Izzy Dyer, Commercial Director at Luxus

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Luxus, established in 1965, is a UK manufacturer of recycled and technical thermoplastic compounds. The company has been producing materials with high recycled content for decades, supplying industries such as automotive and packaging. As regulations and market demands change, Luxus continues to develop sustainable solutions that help reduce reliance on virgin plastics.

In this PlastikMedia HotSeat, Izzy Dyer, Commercial Director, discusses how Luxus has evolved since she joined the team, the future of plastics, and their own experiences in the industry.

What trends do you think will shape the future of UK plastics? How will Luxus respond?

At Luxus, we believe sustainability will be a driving force in the future of the UK plastics industry. Over the past 20 years, we’ve seen significant changes, particularly with new regulations in automotive and packaging. It’s clear that embracing environmental responsibility isn’t just a choice—it’s a necessity, not only for us but also for companies that still rely heavily on virgin plastics.

At Luxus, sustainability is deeply embedded in our operations. We’ve been producing technical compounds with high recycled content since the 1970s, long before it was a trend. Looking ahead, we’re committed to supporting both our customers and suppliers on a journey toward a more environmentally friendly, economically viable, and socially responsible future. Together, we can create lasting positive change in the plastics industry.

How has Luxus developed during your tenure?

Throughout my time at Luxus, one of the most important aspects of our growth has been our commitment to continuous learning and staying ahead of industry trends. The market and regulations are constantly evolving, and to remain competitive, it’s essential to keep up with these changes. By staying proactive, we’ve been able to anticipate shifts and adjust our strategies accordingly.

A key area of focus for Luxus has been the development of our PP & HDPE PRC compounds. We’ve made significant strides in creating more sustainable solutions, ensuring that we’re not just meeting current demand but also driving the industry toward a more environmentally responsible future. Our ongoing investment in machinery and technology is another vital part of our strategy—this enables us to stay at the cutting edge, ensuring that we can adapt quickly and remain at the forefront of innovation. By embracing these changes and investing in our future, we’re able to keep delivering high-quality products that meet both market needs and sustainability goals.

What do you credit as the key to your success?

The key to my success is a commitment to continuous learning and staying ahead of market trends. The industry is always evolving, and legislation often changes with it. To remain competitive, it’s essential to keep adapting. By staying informed and proactive, I can anticipate shifts and adjust our strategy to meet new challenges and opportunities. This mindset has allowed me to drive growth and innovation while staying aligned with the needs of the market.

What has been the greatest challenge in your career?

Adapting to the shift from face-to-face meetings and phone calls to virtual platforms like Teams has been one of my biggest challenges. I’ve always considered myself a bit “old school” in valuing personal interaction and the relationship-building that comes with it. For me, in-person conversations create a stronger sense of connection and trust, which is difficult to replicate in virtual meetings.

While online tools have proven essential and convenient, I’ve always believed in the importance of a personal touch. Now that things are returning to normal, it’s great to see people gravitating back to face-to-face meetings and networking events. For me, the key is finding the right balance between leveraging online tools and maintaining those meaningful, in-person interactions that foster long-lasting relationships.

What advice do you wish you’d had on entering the industry and does that differ from the advice you would give to an apprentice joining now?

Having worked in the waste and recycling industry for nearly 20 years, I’ve seen how much the industry has evolved. If I could go back, the advice I wish I’d received would be to stay open to change and embrace every challenge as an opportunity to learn and grow.

For apprentices entering the industry today, my advice would remain the same—but with an added emphasis on adaptability. The pace of innovation and change in this field is faster than ever, and staying curious and flexible is key to thriving. Embracing change isn’t just a necessity; it’s what makes this industry so exciting and full of opportunity.

What hidden talents do you have?

Back in the day, I was a bit of a sharpshooter on the basketball court—nailing 3-pointers was my thing! These days, though, my aim is more focused on seaside arcades, where I’m known for hitting high scores instead of rebounds. I still play, but now it’s more about winning tickets than trophies.
