BPF | Tackling the Challenges of Verifying Recycled Content

In response to the growing need for companies to have a means of proving products contain a specified amount recycled material, the British Plastics Federation (BPF) has launched a new event: VeriPlast 2022. The online event is dedicated to exploring the verification of recycled content in plastic packaging applications and is taking place on 8 December 2022.

The event will be chaired by Sustainable Certifications Group Executive Director Tim Baldwin and will open with a presentation from European Plastics Convertors (EuPC) Technical Director Geoffrey Tillieux, who will provide the audience with an overview of the current situation.

Mireia Boada, project manager at Recyclass will follow, presenting on the certification of mechanically recycled content and the importance of standardization in a European-wide certification scheme. ISCC Systems Senior Manager Inna Nelsen will then present on the certification of chemically recycled content, providing an overview of the various ‘chain of custody’ models, including ‘book and claim’ and mass balance.

Renate Messing, a research scientist from UL Solutions, will discuss the role of standards and the UL recycled content validation mark, prior to a panel discussion featuring all the speakers.

The event will wrap up with talks on digital deposit return schemes from the founder of Circularity Solutions, Duncan Midwood; using UV light to quantify recycled content from Manchester University’s Dr Tom Bennet; and the role of an open data standard in enabling full transparency from Dsposal CEO Sophie Walker.

Those who register for the event also get access to two pre-recorded sessions: one on ‘Recycled PET Characterisation’ from Impact Solutions Commercial Director Steven Burns and one on the importance of security measures to avoid fraud from Stardust Secured Business Development Manager Sergei Sychov.

Attendees will also receive a full copy of the BPF’s ‘Incorporating Recycled Content’ seminar from earlier this year, featuring thirteen speakers.

BPF Membership Services Director Stephen Hunt states: “Being able to quantify and verify recycled content is clearly an area of growing importance to plastic packaging manufacturers, major brands and recyclers. We created this event to provide a deep dive into the topic and to highlight many of the technical innovations that exist to provide the entire supply chain with a way to confidently claim that products include recycled material.
