Bausano Reinvents the Concept of Innovation: Introducing New Analysis Tools

Bausano has taken a huge step in its innovation by introducing new analysis tools and doubling the space dedicated to testing.

Bausano, an international company specialising in designing and manufacturing customised extrusion lines for plastics processing, is at the forefront of technological advancements in extrusion line production and reinforcing its Research and Development (R&D) department. The company is revolutionising the concept of innovation by introducing new analysis tools and doubling the space dedicated to testing. In pursuit of this goal, Bausano offers a wide range of services that enable customers to experience the company’s commitment to quality in the design of their systems.

Thanks to the dedicated test and experimentation lab, Bausano can offer a unique working method, which starts from the customer’s specific formulation to elaborate structured analysis, which aims to make each extrusion line tailor-made for every customer. Before designing a system, Bausano carry out analysis using a capillary rheometer, which studies the behaviour of the material when it flows and deforms, it helps understand the viscosity as a function of the rate gradient.

With the rheological material characterisation, Bausano can:

  • define the type of materials that can be extruded from an existing plant
  • optimise head design
  • fine-tune the design of the screws

Meanwhile, the information is also collected and processed using a plastograph. The customer starting materials are fed into the chamber, at this point, they are heated and undergo stress between two counter-rotating wheels. During the manufacturing, the torque applied to the rotating screws is measured, which gives information on the viscosity of the material and, therefore, on any subsequent changes (gelation, branching, degradation).

The analysis results, a fundamental and distinct preliminary step in Bausoan’s know-how, are compared with data processed by software dedicated to fluid dynamic analysis. This pre-design phase allows the development of new extrusion heads, dies, and screws to be optimised by predicting exactly how the material will behave during the machining process.

Bausano’s work process also differs in that the data returned by the lab instruments can be tested in detail in the factory. The company is expanding its premises and doubling the space dedicated to the test room for its customers. In particular, Bausano has two counter-rotating twin-screw extruders, MD30 and MD75.

MD30- for small production trials, allowing the customer’s formulation to be introduced into the machine and the extruded output to be observed before the line is scaled up to the industrial level.

MD75- dedicated to trials on medium-sized plants, is aimed at guaranteeing the productivity targets required by the customer and providing the latter with a sample of material so that it can also be subjected to internal quality controls.

Two more complete systems are available to Bausano customers to enhance the testing further.

  • One is based on an E-GO single-screw extruder for testing PP/PE base blends, for producing single and multilayer pipes.
  • Second being based on a single-screw extruder from the E-GO R range to test the possibility of regenerating waste materials.

The uniqueness of Bausano’s services, therefore lies in being able to test the customer’s system twice at its own site. Prior to set up at the customer’s production site, Bausano starts up the line in its own factory, either in the presence of the customer or virtually, to validate the design assumptions and test its performance, operation and noise levels. Therefore, Bausano technicians can intervene if needed before the factory acceptance test (FAT), guaranteeing maximum flexibility for the customer. This way, Bausano offers a space where customers can refine their R&D, for a concept of innovation that goes beyond technological progress and also embraces the value-added services sector

“The priority for Bausano is customer satisfaction. This is why our distinctive feature lies both in the exclusive range of pre-design services which, starting from the customer’s formulation, allows us to tailor-make the best extrusion line, and in the possibility of verifying the design itself with double testing,” says Giovanni Bausano, R&D Manager.
