At EmmersonWills, we proudly stand as The ISO Simplification Experts. Achieving simplicity takes expertise and intention. As Blaise Pascal once noted, “I would have written a shorter letter, but I did not have the time.” This sentiment rings especially true in ISO management systems, where simplifying complex structures is no easy feat—but it’s one that delivers immense value.
The Challenge of Simplicity in ISO
We often find that procedures are put in place not because they’re needed, but because they’re expected—for auditors, not for the business. In some cases, these documents are so neglected that you could practically blow dust and cobwebs off them. I once told a new client who presented a stack of untouched documents, “If you don’t need them, why would I?”—a light-hearted but revealing question.
Our founder, a former UKAS management systems auditor, has seen the worst of this problem. In some businesses, he’s encountered as many as eight separate documents just to cover the context of clauses 4-6 of Annex SL. That’s not simplification—that’s overcomplication. In response, he developed what we call the SAIIILOR matrix—a single document that covers those clauses with usable, valuable information. The matrix is live, cross references data, and isn’t subject to the frustration of making a change in one document only to have to replicate or check it across others.
Cutting Out Unnecessary Work
Our approach reflects our saying: “Never write a procedure if a process will do, and never write a process if a form will do.” We don’t believe in creating work for the sake of work. What’s the point of writing a detailed procedure on how to fill in a form, especially in today’s world where much of it is digital through SaaS operating systems? It’s inefficient and outdated. Instead, we design systems that are lean and intuitive—manuals that serve as roadmaps to tools, not rulebooks.
Less is More
Our philosophy is rooted in simplicity. As we always say, “The more there is to read, the less it is read.” Overly complex systems burden employees and create confusion. This is why we focus on cutting out the noise and building ISO management systems that are easy to use and understand. The result is higher engagement and better compliance from the workforce.
When we anticipate frequent changes, we make sure those details aren’t buried deep in the manual. Instead, we point to them, protecting document control and ensuring that updates are quick and easy. This future-proofing approach is crucial to maintaining both simplicity and compliance.
Simplicity = Profit
Simplicity doesn’t just streamline processes—it drives profit. We’ve seen the impact firsthand. In extreme cases, several clients have reached out to us because they were on the verge of losing, or had already lost, their quality or SHEQ manager. These companies feared disruption, but once we simplified their systems, they found they didn’t even need to replace that position. How? By making the system so intuitive and efficient that the responsibilities could be shared among the right people without burdening anyone unnecessarily.
This is the power of simplicity. By reducing complexity, we help companies save not just time, but substantial costs as well.
